Why do you want to be a school board member?

I want to be the voice between the public and the school. As a parent, I’d like to be able to have a clear communication between the school and myself. I also want to invest in and help some of the most valuable community members, the children in our community.

What does education justice mean to you? What does it mean specifically in the context of your school district?

Education justice means giving everyone and culture a voice and to not rely on stereotypes. In our school district, students should be encouraged to examine primary sources from different perspectives, so history is not presented from one perspective that relies on stereotypes of other ethnicities and cultures. Student should be encouraged to challenge inconsistencies in stereotypes, and they should welcome dialogue that includes others as primary speakers.

If you could completely reimagine the way schools look after this public health crisis, what would they look like?

I can envision a school with more flexibility in the education setting. Teachers keeping in touch with both students and parents concerning work, students having opportunities to learn and finish work outside of the classroom. All while knowing that in-class learning is imperative for students, while being conscious of why some students may be absent.

Describe how you think parents, students, and families should be involved in making decisions within your school district?

Parents and students alike should be actively joining in decisions by participating in school board meetings as well as clear communications between parents, teachers, and administration.

What are your top 3 educational priorities/goals within your school district?

Encourage critical thinking. Prepare students for the workforce and college. Help develop social and team work skills for the future.

What are your top 3 educational priorities/goals at a state level?

Acedemia, social skills, and work skills.

What challenges do you anticipate this school year to COVID and what do you think your school district must do to keep students & staff safe?

As the flu season nears, I can imagine that concerns will arise as students come in showing some flu like symptoms. Communication between administration and parents is key at this point, ensuring the safety of our students and our staff. But ultimately following the guidelines of the Health
Department.

What should be your school district’s top spending priorities in their budget? Alternatively, what should not be prioritized your district’s budget?

Technology and class related items. In this ever changing world, it’s important to keep up to date while actively trying to improve.

Spending priorities should be based on student needs in the district.

What role do you think standardized tests should play in your school district?

Standardized tests should be used to see student growth throughout their academic career and to see where students are struggling or thriving. Teachers can then use this information to help create instruction for individual student needs.

If you could have an impact on your school district’s curriculum , what changes would you make? What, if anything, would you keep the same?

I would make sure that the curriculum is current on all state standards. I would also check to see that there are multiple ways for students to display their learning, more than just paper pencil activities and assessments. I would talk with teachers and administrators to get their thoughts and opinions, since they’re working with the curriculum every day.

What responsibility do you believe your school district has in supporting students’ and staffs’ mental and emotional health/wellbeing?

In order to have successful classrooms and learning, staff members need to have mental and emotional support from the district. If your staff isn’t being taken care of, they won’t be at their full potential. Students also need to learn social and emotional skills so they can cope with and manage difficult situations and emotions. Social and emotional learning also allows students to learn about empathy and how to resolve conflicts. A mind that is well taken care of will be able to perform and learn better.

How do you think your school district should handle student discipline/and make schools a safe place for students and staff?

The style of discipline depends on the grade level. Discipline in the elementary looks different than at the high school level. Discipline should fit the severity of the situation. Forming positive relationships and proactive and de escalating responses can help serve as preventative behavior measures. However, students do need to see that all actions have consequences, whether positive or negative.

What are your top priorities around special education in your district?

Every student should be given the opportunity to learn and be given the tools for success.

What is your perspective on working towards achieving equity within your school district?

Providing staff and resources to meet the needs of a variety of students based on their needs and situations.
