Clark, Xondra - School District of The City of Oak Park

Are you an incumbent?

My thoughts on school discipline are that Discipline is a crucial aspect of maintaining a safe and productive learning environment, but it must be exercised fairly and equitably. In our district, it's essential to ensure that disciplinary measures are not only consistent but also consider the individual circumstances of each student. I believe in a balanced approach that includes clear expectations, appropriate consequences for behavior, and opportunities for students to learn from their mistakes.

Restorative practices offer a powerful alternative to traditional discipline by focusing on repairing harm and rebuilding relationships rather than simply punishing students. These practices encourage accountability and empathy, allowing students to understand the impact of their actions and take responsibility in a constructive way. By involving students, educators, and families in the restorative process, we can create a more supportive school environment that promotes positive behavior and reduces repeat offenses.

On both issues I would work with my colleagues collaboratively because we are a team.

Brief Intro of Candidate

The mental health and well-being of our students are paramount. I would work to increase the availability of mental health resources within our schools, including hiring more counselors and providing training for staff to recognize and respond to mental health issues. Additionally, I would support programs that foster a positive school climate, helping students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

I was born and raised in Detroit and attended high school in Southfield. After some time my husband, son, and I moved to Oak Park in 2019. I’ve recently graduated from Oakland Community College with two associate degrees with the intention of pursuing my bachelor’s degree in secondary education. My husband, Christopher, and I have cherished our five years in Oak Park, watching our son Dominic thrive in our school system.
We're grateful for the friendships we've formed and proud to be part of the Oak Park Schools family. For the past two years, I've dedicated myself to improving our children's educational experience. From volunteering at Lessenger Early Childhood to leading the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and initiating the M.O.M.S mentor group, I've been deeply involved in our school community.
I've also been an active participant in various field trips and community events like Trunk or Treat, where my family and I have enjoyed connecting with neighbors and spreading joy.

Students are directly impacted by the decisions we make, so it’s vital that their voices are heard. I am committed to fostering strong relationships with parents, caregivers, and community members, and to encouraging collaboration among all groups for the benefit of our students. We already have a solid foundation in place, and I would continue to nurture and strengthen these connections to ensure ongoing support and success for our students.

Yes

How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

My thoughts go to a portion of our mission statement "To create an inclusive learning community that provides the best academic and social experience...". Our community thrives on the environments we create. To improve Black student achievement, we must continue to work within our educational goals, and provide every opportunity possible. I'm proud of the work our Superintendent has put forth, and I am proud of my colleagues.

The beautiful thing about our city and district is that we are a melting pot. We must build upon the relationships we've already begun to foster. To have an inclusive and welcoming space to learn allows our students the ability to learn, as well as allows families to feel comfortable. Everyone deserves a safe space regardless of who they are or where they come from.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

Recruiting and retaining staff can be difficult, but I believe the working conditions go hand in hand with pay/benefits. Times are tough with inflation and the cost of living, and we do not take it lightly when our staff decide not only to come to work in the Oak Park School District, but to stay with us. You should feel comfortable and valued in the workplace. Professional development, ideal conditions, and competitive pay are key to hiring and retaining staff.
