Lang, Ethan - Grand Blanc Community Schools

Are you an incumbent?

No

Brief Intro of Candidate

My name is Ethan Lang, and I am proud to announce that I am running for a seat on the Grand Blanc Board of Education. I am a graduate of Grand Blanc High School, class of 2022, being the tenth person in my family to graduate from Grand Blanc. I've lived in GB my whole life, and have attended GB schools from Kindergarten to 12th grade. I am running to represent the people that matter the most: the students and the teachers. My mother is a teacher in Clio, and I've seen what it's like to helped by and ignored by your admin. I walked the halls of GBCS as a student from 2009 until my graduation in 2022. I know the struggles of being a student in this ever changing world. I want to help as many students and teachers as I possibly can, and be the type of administrators that help, instead of ignore.

Endorsements

I am seeking the Run For Something endorsements, and have been talking to different politicians as well.

How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

To engage parents in the community, I would have office hours/coffee with me, where parents could come and speak directly to me and express any concerns they may have. I know at board meetings, you can't directly address any one board member, and often times, the members are busy after the meeting. I believe that having the opportunity to speak to these members directly would be more helpful.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

I believe that people should face the consequences to their actions. If a student is caught in the bathroom with a vape, then that student should get detention or an in-school suspension. If a student is caught selling drugs on school property, then that student should be expelled. These are all things that have happened in my school, and the punishment was fitting. I believe that the disciplinary committee is doing a good job as is, and I would look forward to seeing what happens more behind the scenes.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

I believe that schools should provide resources to students such as counseling and safe spaces, where students can go to destress if needed. I also believe that schools should start implementing "Mental Health Days" when there are times that students go a long stretch without any days off or any breaks.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

I believe that more funding should be provided to schools that lack the necessary materials. I also believe that to improve Black student achievements, you need to encourage these students so they know that they are doing a good job, just like you should any other student.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

I would plan fun nights or events in the school district that highlights other cultures. Such as having a world fair in the gymnasium where parents and students can come and learn more about other cultures and religions. I myself and gay, asian, and an immigrant, so I feel that if I am elected, then I can help be a voice on the school board for these minority groups.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

I believe in order to recruit staff of color, you need to let them know that they will be supported in the school district, and won't feel discriminated against. They need to know that the school district is a diverse one that accepts everyone no matter race, gender identity, religion, or sexual orientation.
