Brief Intro of Candidate

I hail from New Jersey but was raised in Detroit since 1984. My educational journey began at Detroit Public School, transitioned to St. Scholastica for elementary years, and culminated at Bishop Borgess High School and Academy. It was here that I cultivated a passion for advocating for universal student welfare through active participation in the student council. My tenure at Wayne State University was enriched with membership in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., an association that fostered invaluable mentorship and propelled me to champion student initiatives on campus. Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the School of Business, I ventured into the real estate domain, all the while reveling in the joys of family life with my wife and five children.

To support students' mental health, we should consider offering a course like Human-Centered Leadership, which can teach them valuable coping skills for managing life, school, and work. Additionally, incorporating activities such as meditation and yoga could be beneficial.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Create an inclusive and supportive environment that caters to the specific needs of Black students. Collaborate with parents to identify areas where assistance is needed and provide support on all fronts. Offer extracurricular activities to boost students' confidence outside the classroom. Prioritize emotional and mental well-being to aid students who may have endured experiences hindering their ability to focus and learn effectively.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

Establishing diverse leadership with equal representation allows everyone to contribute to decision-making processes to ensure that all voices are heard and respected. Creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, including our children, so they feel comfortable and respected while also being mindful not to offend others. Fostering community engagement through events such as family nights and opportunities to learn about different cultures. Providing teachers with continuous professional development training to help them effectively manage their classrooms.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Establish recruitment pipelines from historically Black colleges and universities and Hispanic and Indigenous-serving institutions to reach a broader talent pool. Create pathways for current students or paraprofessionals in the district to become teachers through scholarship programs or credentialing support. Additionally, assist with housing and establish better relations with student loan programs to aid with loan forgiveness. Foster diverse, inclusive working conditions and cultural changes while providing a competitive pay rate, insurance, and retirement package.
