Brief Intro of Candidate

My name is Tanisha Miller and I am running for the School District of Pontiac School Board Member. I am a mother to a 15-year-old 10th grade student that attends Pontiac High School. My personal experience as a parent with the district in addition to my volunteer work with the school gives me first hand vision to the needs, challenges, and strengths of Pontiac Community Schools. I believe that education develops our children’s success as they transition into adulthood. I am invested in my community, our students, and our teachers. I have 13 years of experience in governance, developing, and implementing policies and procedures for a nonprofit mental health organization. In addition to that, I have 5 years’ experience serving as the Government Affairs chair for the AFA Union (association of flight attendants). Collectively, my previous experiences provide me the tools to effectively work together for the betterment of education and resources for the students and families of Pontiac.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

Discipline promotes a positive learning environment for students where they can study effectively and get chances to learn valuable knowledge and skills. Restorative practices including developing communication strategies and building relationships can be beneficial to the classroom learning environment.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

For 13 years, I worked for a non profit mental health organization. I know first hand how important mental health services are and how, when treated, can improve the quality of life of individuals and families. Improving student mental health begins with increasing mental health literacy for students and families and if necessary, tools and strategies for teachers, administrators, and staff.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

We need to understand, acknowledge, and address the specific challenges Black and minority students face in schools because of their race. Black student achievement improvement involves partnering with the community, practitioners, advocates, researchers, thought leaders, students, and parents to a school environment that centers Black student voices and promote resources for Black student success and advancement.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

A standard of safety and respect creates a learning environment where students feel value regardless to their background, race, home language, religion, income, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Reexamining established school policies or the establishment or new policies to promote the inclusion of all students.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

There is a critical shortage of teachers of color in urban school districts, where low salaries, limited resources, and competition with larger districts. It is important to develop partnerships locally with universities, the community, and teachers of color to actively recruit diverse, talented educators.
