How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

I would engage them by reminding them that educating children is a joint effort. The school system cannot accomplish these goals without their participation and their devotion. They need to be aware of what their children are learning and cooperate with the school to ensure that their children are upholding their responsibilities to the curriculum at home.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

I believe children need a clear understanding of what is expected of them, socially as well as educationally. I believe that early dialogue is key in addition to constant reminders of class expectations and goals. If all of that fails, disciplinary actions of some kind is mandatory. If negative behavior is not corrected swiftly, it would instill insecurities in some children while breeding this negative behavior in others.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

Diet is always a key factor in mental health, and a healthy lifestyle also improves mental health and clarity of mind.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Family participation. It truly takes a village to raise and train children well.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

School is a place to learn how to read, write, and do math. A clean, safe environment with disability accessible areas is all that the school should provide. A school over steps their boundaries when they attempt to include social issues. That is what the family is for.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Pay is important, but it's not everything. There are jobs where people are sorely underpaid, but they love their work, they love the support they receive from management, they love their work environment, they love the people they work with, as well as many other reasons. It's not always just about money.
