Lisa Valerio-Nowc, Clitondale Board of Education
How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?
It is easy to say that a person has an open door policy but I prefer to extend that invitation a bit more. I'm not here to talk, I'm here to listen. As a board member of two years, I've encouraged Parents, community leaders and students to reach out to me when they have concerns or suggestions. It is my hope that when they have done so, they knew that they had a board member who listened, was supportive and took steps to making CCS stronger and better.
What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?
Currently at CCS I believe that school discipline is on target and its direction in keeping students and staff safe. Restorative practices are very effective in teaching students on how to resolve problems and conflicts. If administrators are consistent in using proven techniques with children to solve problems and build relationships, there is a good chance that student behaviors improve.
What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health
The Covid crisis has brought us a world where no one felt safe, even in their own homes. Is it any wonder youngsters are facing mental health issues more than before. As adminstrators, parents and teachers it is important to emphasize that children have a support system in place to aid them. As a school community we must help students obtain the help they need for their situation. In this way we ensure their success on a personal level and academically.
What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?
All students must be encouraged to reach their academic potential. Each administrator staff and school board member must lead by example the importance of self discipline and holding yourself accountable. This is done by setting goals, doing the work required to succeed and being accountable for your actions.
What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?
I'm proud to say that CCS has done the small things to help our school district inclusive. An example of this is at our High School Commencement we had the ceremonies interpreted in American Sign Language. To me, it is the small things that others overlook that make the biggest impact. If we continue to find the simple, small ways to make everyone feel welcomed and safe, it becomes something memorable and meaningful for everyone.
What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?
Retention is tough today because the competition is fierce with every school district looking to fill in vacancies. Having said that, I believe the key to retention is to have your teachers be part of the solution to improving the school district. When the staff feels they have a seat at the table to discuss how and where to make improvement, they will want to stay and be part of positive change in the district.
