How would you engage and include parents, caregivers, community members and students in decision-making in your district around things like curriculum, budgeting and district policy?

I invite any and all members of the district to join our committee meetings, board meetings, and workshops. I am also willing to talk to people outside of meetings.

What are your thoughts on school discipline and the way it is exercised in your school district? What are your thoughts on restorative practices?

I think that school discipline is up to our administrative team. I believe in restorative practices and encourage our administrators to use that approach whenever appropriate.

What are your thoughts on how to improve student mental health

Student mental health is one of the greatest challenges educators face. I think the biggest impact a district can have in this realm is not only educating our students, but taking time to get educated ourself and educating parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers.

What are your thoughts on ways to improve Black student achievement in your district and in Michigan schools overall?

Our district has a very limited black student population and although this may be a national and regional issue, I feel our black population performs at or above everyone else.

What are your thoughts on how to ensure that all students and their families, regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, religion, income status, etc., feel safe and included in your district?

We all have our own ideology and beliefs, the best thing we can do is remember that our beliefs and ideology may differ from the students and families we serve. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve our best. This is another issue that education and awareness is so critical to overcome it.

What are your thoughts on how to recruit and retain staff, particularly staff of color, in your district with regard to pay, benefits, and working conditions?

Living in a small rural community, it is always difficult to find staff. However, our administration does a great job of giving the board information about the other districts in our area to ensure we are competitive.
